Ask Jeff Hughes, Founder
Jeffrey J. Hughes, Loyola Law School class of 1992, practices law with a social conscience. Hughes has created a venue where working and middle-income people can get good legal advice for a reasonable price. At Legal Grind, Coffee & Counsel, customers can meet with a lawyer over a cup of coffee in the informal atmosphere of a coffeehouse. Hughes is also a national advocate for the unbundling of legal services. In this system, rather than buying the whole menu of a lawyer's expertise, clients simply buy help with certain aspects of a legal task. To that end the Legal Grind, through its network of attorneys and in-house document preparers, offers a menu of "a la carte" legal services. Customers also can browse legal self-help books, or ask for a referral to a member of Legal Grind's California Bar certified attorney referral service. "I wanted a place that would build trust, because there is a trust deficiency between consumers and the legal profession." The idea of blending a cafe atmosphere with a menu of affordable and in-demand legal services has been successful, and earned Legal Grind, Inc. the American Bar Association's 2001 Louis M. Brown Award for Legal Access.
