Document Preparation

Here at the Legal Grind, we are happy to help you fill out various legal documents if you decide to represent yourself in court. We do recommend, however, that before you decide to do that, that you first talk with a lawyer. The law (Business & Professions Code section 6400) allows us to help you prepare documents, but only according to your specific direction. So you have to tell us exactly what you want us to do. To help us understand what you want and to make sure that we follow the law, we ask that you follow the six step approach below in using our document preparation service.

Complete the intake questionnaire. We need to know about you so that we can help you complete the form.
Legal Grind will contact you to discuss your options. We will discuss the appropriate forms with you and the price of preparing such forms. Based on what we learn about your situation, we may advise that you consult with a lawyer.
Complete the applicable information sheets on line. We can only complete documents at your specific direction, and there are some forms that you have to fill out yourself. For example, in a divorce proceeding, each party must complete an income and expense declaration. We cannot do that for you.
Legal Grind will review the information and consult with you. Our registered Legal Document Assistant will look over the information and may need to ask additional questions. You may also share your concerns with the Legal Document Assistant. A Legal Document Assistant may not provide any kind of advice, explanation, opinion, or recommendation to you about possible legal rights, remedies, defenses, options, selection of forms, or strategies. At this point, the Legal Document Assistant may again suggest that you consult with a lawyer.
Legal Grind will provide the completed forms to you and give you clear filing instructions. If after the information is provided to us and we consult with you, you decide to go forward and represent yourself, we will provide you with the forms you ask us to help you complete and we will tell you how and where to file them.
Finalize, complete and file. Remember, these are your forms and you ultimately are responsible for what is on those forms. You need to read them carefully and make sure that they are accurate. If you are satisfied that they are, you sign them and then file them according to the instructions we give you. Again, at this point you may decide that you would rather consult with a lawyer.
A lot of work is involved in representing yourself. For some people, it may be the best way to proceed. For others, it is best to hire a lawyer. At the Legal Grind, we try to give you the resources you need to make the best decision for you.
